Approximately October 27, 2020
The heliport was closed due to the permanent closure of the hospital it served. ProMedica consolidated its two older hospitals in Lenawee County, Bixby Hospital in Adrian and Herrick Hospital in Tecumseh, into a single, new, state-of-the-art facility. On October 27, 2020, all services, including emergency and trauma care requiring helicopter transport, were relocated to the newly opened ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital. The closure was a strategic decision based on modernizing healthcare facilities and consolidating resources, making the Bixby Hospital and its heliport redundant.
The site of the former ProMedica Bixby Hospital, including the location of the heliport, is no longer a medical facility. After the hospital's closure in 2020, the property was acquired by the City of Adrian for redevelopment. Demolition of the old hospital buildings began in late 2023 and is ongoing. The site is currently an active demolition and construction zone, slated for future mixed-use redevelopment. The physical helipad structure has been or will be completely removed as part of this process.
The ProMedica Bixby Hospital Heliport was a critical piece of infrastructure for emergency medical services in Adrian and the surrounding Lenawee County region. Its sole function was to support Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). The heliport enabled the rapid transport of critically ill and injured patients to the Bixby Hospital's emergency department. It also served as a vital transfer point, allowing patients requiring specialized care (such as advanced trauma, cardiac, or neurological treatment) to be airlifted to larger, tertiary care centers in Toledo, Ohio, or Ann Arbor, Michigan. For decades, it played a key role in the regional trauma system, facilitating operations for air ambulance services like ProMedica Air and Survival Flight.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the ProMedica Bixby Hospital Heliport. The hospital it was built to serve has been permanently closed and demolished. All regional medical helicopter services are now directed to the modern heliport at the new ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital (FAA Identifier: 0MI2), which has replaced the Bixby facility's function entirely.
