Approximately early 2000s. While an exact public closure date is unavailable, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the heliport was active in the mid-1990s but its markings were removed and it fell into disuse by the mid-2000s.
The closure was not due to a single event but likely a combination of factors. The primary reasons include: economic considerations and corporate cost-cutting initiatives by its owner, IBM; a shift in corporate culture away from the executive perks common in the 1980s and 90s; and evolving executive travel patterns that reduced the need for a dedicated heliport. Increased security scrutiny for private aviation in the New York area post-9/11 may have also been a contributing factor.
The physical structure of the heliport—a large, circular asphalt pad—remains intact on the north side of the main IBM headquarters building. However, it is no longer certified or maintained as an active aviation facility. The 'H' landing markings have been removed, and the area is now repurposed for overflow vehicle parking or is otherwise left vacant.
The heliport, more formally known as the IBM Armonk Heliport (with a former FAA identifier of NY35), was the private aviation facility for the IBM Corporate Headquarters. Its sole purpose was to provide rapid and secure transportation for IBM's top executives. It facilitated travel between the global headquarters in Armonk, major metropolitan airports (like JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark), and heliports in Manhattan. The heliport was a significant logistical asset and a symbol of IBM's corporate stature during the late 20th century.
There are no known public plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. Given the high operational and maintenance costs, and the close proximity of Westchester County Airport (HPN) which offers comprehensive private and charter aviation services (including helicopters), it is extremely unlikely that IBM will reactivate this private facility.
