Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately in the early to mid-1990s. A precise date is not officially documented, but its closure coincides with the widespread shutdown of similar agricultural airstrips in Slovakia following the political and economic changes after the Velvet Revolution of 1989.

Reason for Closure

Primarily economic reasons. The airstrip was used for agricultural aviation (crop dusting), a service operated by the state-owned company Slov-Air. After 1989, the restructuring of agriculture, the breakup of collective farms (JRD), and the decline of state-sponsored aerial application services led to a sharp decrease in demand, rendering the airstrip economically unviable and obsolete.

Current Status

The site has been completely repurposed and is now occupied by a large photovoltaic power plant (solar farm). Satellite imagery clearly shows the entire area of the former grass runway and airfield covered with rows of solar panels and related power infrastructure. The original aviation infrastructure no longer exists.

Historical Significance

The airstrip was a 'poľnohospodárske letisko' (agricultural airfield) and a functional part of a dense network supporting Czechoslovakia's socialist-era agricultural industry. Its primary, and likely sole, purpose was to serve as an operational base for crop-dusting aircraft, such as the Zlín Z-37 Čmelák and Antonov An-2. These aircraft provided essential services like fertilization and pest control to the large surrounding collective farms. The airstrip had no known military, passenger, or significant cargo transport role; its significance was purely utilitarian and tied to the local agricultural economy of the time.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land has been permanently redeveloped for industrial energy generation. The construction of the solar farm over the entire former airfield makes any future aviation use impossible without completely removing the current power plant, which is highly improbable.
