Approximately 2012-2014. The airstrip was officially cancelled and ceased operations to make way for a major construction project. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still intact in 2012, but by 2014-2015, significant earthworks for the new motorway had begun, completely obliterating the site.
The closure was due to land expropriation for a national infrastructure project. The airstrip's location was directly in the path of the new D1 motorway section between Lietavská Lúčka and Dubná Skala, specifically at the site of the western portal of the Višňové tunnel. The land was required for the construction of the tunnel entrance, access roads, and associated facilities, making continued aviation operations impossible.
The site of the former airstrip is no longer an aviation facility and is completely unrecognizable. The land has been permanently transformed and is now occupied by the massive infrastructure of the D1 motorway and the western portal of the Višňové tunnel. The original grass runway and any small hangars or buildings have been entirely removed and replaced by highway lanes, service roads, and construction support areas.
Višňové Airstrip was a registered ultralight landing area (known in Slovak as 'UL plocha') serving the general aviation community around the city of Žilina. Its primary function was for recreational and sport flying of ultralight aircraft, motor gliders, and potentially hang gliders. The airstrip was valued by local pilots for its scenic location nestled at the foot of the Malá Fatra mountains. It provided an informal and accessible alternative to the larger, more regulated Žilina Airport (LZZI), fostering a local community of aviation enthusiasts.
Zero. There are no prospects for reopening the airstrip at its original location. The construction of the D1 motorway and the Višňové tunnel is a permanent and irreversible change to the landscape. The land is irrevocably repurposed, and it is physically impossible to re-establish an airfield on the site. There are no known public plans to create a replacement airstrip under the Višňové name in a different location.
