Approximately early 2000s (circa 2001-2004)
The air base was closed as part of a large-scale strategic reorganization of the Swedish Armed Forces following the end of the Cold War. The extensive and costly 'Bas 90' dispersal base system, of which Uråsa was a part, was deemed obsolete in the new geopolitical landscape. The closure was driven by significant budget cuts and a shift in military strategy away from defending against a large-scale invasion.
The site has been completely demilitarized and sold to private interests. It has been repurposed and is now known as 'Uråsa Företagspark' (Uråsa Business Park). The former military infrastructure, including the hardened aircraft shelters and service areas, are used by various companies for logistics, manufacturing, and storage. The main runway itself is now part of the public road network (Route 27). The long, straight paved areas are also a popular venue for motorsports events, including drag racing, car shows, and driver training courses.
Uråsa Air Base, also known as Fält 43 (Field 43), was a key component of Sweden's 'Bas 90' air base system developed during the Cold War. It was not a permanently manned base but a wartime dispersal base, kept in a state of high readiness. Its primary purpose was to ensure the survivability of the Swedish Air Force in the event of war by scattering combat aircraft away from their vulnerable main bases. Operations would have involved aircraft like the Saab 37 Viggen and potentially the JAS 39 Gripen. The base featured a main runway integrated into a public road, shorter auxiliary runways, and numerous camouflaged and dispersed hardstands and service points hidden in the surrounding forest to protect aircraft from attack.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Uråsa as an aviation facility. The infrastructure has been fundamentally converted for civilian industrial and public use, with the main runway now serving as a public highway. The region's commercial and general aviation needs are adequately met by the nearby Växjö Småland Airport (ESMX/VXO), making a reopening of Uråsa both unnecessary and economically unfeasible.
