June 2011. The last scheduled commercial flight departed on June 10, 2011, after which the Hudiksvall municipality decided to cease operations and decommission the airport.
Primarily economic reasons. The airport's financial viability collapsed when the last remaining airline, Direktflyg, terminated its route to Stockholm-Arlanda due to low passenger numbers. The municipality, which owned and subsidized the airport, could not justify the high annual operating costs (approximately 7-8 million SEK) without scheduled traffic. The decline in passengers was largely attributed to improved and faster train services to Stockholm on the Ostkustbanan (East Coast Line), which offered a more competitive alternative.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer an active airfield. It has been repurposed into a business and industrial park named 'Flygstaden' (The Aviation City). A significant portion of the former airport grounds, including parts of the runway, is now home to one of Sweden's largest solar parks, which was inaugurated in May 2022. The remaining runway surface is also used for motorsport events, particularly drag racing, under the name 'Flygstrippen'.
Opened in 1970, Hudiksvall Airport (formerly ICAO: ESNH, IATA: HUV) was a key piece of infrastructure for the city of Hudiksvall and the surrounding Hälsingland region. Its primary function was to provide a direct air link to the capital, Stockholm. Throughout its operational history, it was served by several regional airlines, including Linjeflyg, Skyways, and finally Direktflyg. The airport supported the local business community by facilitating faster travel, and it also handled general aviation, air taxi services, and essential flights such as air ambulance transport. The ICAO code SE-0088 is a non-standard identifier; the official ICAO code for the airport when it was operational was ESNH.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Hudiksvall Airport. The economic factors that led to its closure remain, and the extensive redevelopment of the site into a business park and a large-scale solar energy farm makes any future return to aviation activities highly improbable and impractical.
That's bad news. Thanks for the update.
