Official taxis and shared shuttle vans (transfers) are the most common options. Desks for multiple transfer companies are located directly inside the arrivals hall. Shared transfers are a cost-effective choice, dropping passengers at their hotels in San Pedro de Atacama (approx. 1.5-hour drive). Private taxis offer a faster, direct service for a higher fixed price.
Several major car rental agencies, including Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Econorent, have desks within the airport terminal's arrivals area. It is highly recommended to book a vehicle in advance, especially during peak tourist season, to ensure availability and better rates. A 4x4 is recommended for exploring more remote areas.
There are no direct public city buses from the airport. The primary shared transport is the airport transfer service (shuttle vans). To access the public long-distance bus network (e.g., Turbus, Pullman Bus), you must first take a taxi or transfer from the airport to the main bus terminal (Terminal de Buses) in the city of Calama.
I just landend on this quite new airport (Dec. 16, 2007). Only LAN and the less known Sky Airline operate flights to CPO (official three-letter-code). The airport is small and efficient. No airbridges.
The old airport - known as Copiapo/Chamonte was about 30 miles to the East, closer to Copiapo. If you search for CPO in Google Earth, you can still see the old airport.
