Approximately 2008-2010. The airfield was not closed on a specific date but was gradually abandoned as its primary operator relocated operations over this period.
Operational consolidation and relocation. The airfield's main user, the 'Gheorghe Bănciulescu' Territorial Airclub of Ploiești (a branch of the Romanian Airclub), moved its activities to the nearby Strejnic Airfield (LRPW). Strejnic offered superior infrastructure, including a paved runway and more modern facilities, making the grass runways and older facilities at Târgșoru Nou redundant.
The airfield is abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the site is no longer in use for aviation. The layout of the grass runways is still faintly visible but is heavily overgrown and unmaintained. The former hangars and support buildings are in a state of disrepair or have been repurposed for non-aviation uses, such as agricultural storage. The land is largely returning to nature, with no signs of active maintenance or use.
Târgșoru Nou Airfield was a notable center for general and sports aviation in the Prahova County region. For many years, it served as the primary base for the Ploiești Airclub. Its operations were focused on flight training, gliding, and parachuting. The airfield played a key role in Romania's civil air sports scene, training numerous pilots, glider pilots, and parachutists and hosting local and national competitions. It was an important part of the country's aviation heritage, particularly in the post-WWII era.
There are no known plans or credible prospects for reopening the Târgșoru Nou Airfield. The regional aviation activities are now firmly consolidated at the better-equipped Strejnic Airfield. Given the deteriorated state of the infrastructure at Târgșoru Nou and the proximity of a superior alternative, any future use of the land is more likely to be for agricultural, industrial, or commercial redevelopment rather than a return to aviation.
