The airport ceased regular commercial operations in the mid-1990s and was officially closed and its land designated for redevelopment in the early 2000s. The decline was gradual following the Romanian Revolution of 1989.
The closure was driven by economic factors. After 1989, the state-run domestic flights operated by TAROM became financially unsustainable due to low passenger demand, high operational costs, and competition from improving road and rail networks to Bucharest. The airport's infrastructure was also aging and would have required significant investment to meet modern standards, which was not considered economically viable for the low traffic volume.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as an airfield. The runway, taxiways, and terminal facilities were demolished. The land is now occupied by the Galați Industrial Park (Parcul Industrial Galați), a zone hosting logistics centers, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows large industrial buildings and new roads where the runway once was.
Galați Airport was primarily a regional and utilitarian airfield. Its most significant period of operation was during the communist era when it handled scheduled domestic passenger flights. The national airline, TAROM, operated regular services connecting the major industrial city of Galați with the capital, Bucharest (usually landing at Băneasa Airport - BBU). These routes were typically flown by turboprop aircraft such as the Antonov An-24. In addition to passenger services, the airport was a base for 'utilitarian aviation,' which included agricultural flights (crop dusting for the fertile surrounding farmlands), air-taxi services, emergency medical flights, and flight training. It served as a key transportation link for the important Danube port and steel-producing city.
There are zero prospects for reopening the original airport, as the site is fully developed. However, for decades there have been persistent discussions and political initiatives to build a completely new, modern international airport to serve the combined economic needs of the Galați-Brăila metropolitan area. This project, often referred to as the 'Galați-Brăila International Airport', has been the subject of numerous feasibility studies and political promises. Despite being a long-standing ambition for regional development, the project has been repeatedly stalled due to political disagreements over location, lack of concrete funding, and bureaucratic delays. While the idea is frequently revived in political discourse, as of now, there is no active, funded plan with a definite timeline for construction.
