Buzău Airfield

The primary reason for closure was land restitution. Following the fall of communism in Romania, laws were enacted to return property that had been nationalized by the state. The land on which the airfield was located was successfully claimed in court by the heirs of the original, pre-communist era owners. The Romanian Aeroclub (Aeroclubul României), which operated the airfield, lost the legal right to use the land and was forced to vacate the premises. This was not a closure for military, economic, or safety reasons, but purely a result of a property ownership dispute.

The site of the former airfield no longer exists as an aviation facility. The land has been completely redeveloped for commercial purposes. The hangars, clubhouse, and other airfield infrastructure were demolished. A significant portion of the former airfield and runway area is now occupied by large retail stores, including a Kaufland supermarket and an Altex electronics store, along with their associated parking lots and access roads. The aviation activities (gliding, parachuting) that were previously hosted at the airfield were relocated to the nearby military Boboc Air Base (Baza 95 Aeriană 'Erou Căpitan Aviator Alexandru Șerbănescu') through an agreement between the Romanian Aeroclub and the Ministry of National Defence.

Buzău Airfield was a significant center for general and sport aviation in the region for many decades. It was not a commercial passenger airport. Its primary operations, managed by the Romanian Aeroclub, were focused on recreational and training activities, including:
- Flight training for light aircraft (piston engine planes).
- Gliding and soaring.
- Parachuting and skydiving training and events.
- Aeromodelling (model aircraft flying).
It served as a vital hub for aviation enthusiasts and was instrumental in training generations of pilots and parachutists, playing a key role in promoting air sports in Romania, particularly during the communist era and in the post-1989 period until its closure.

There are zero prospects for reopening the original Buzău Airfield, as the land has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped. However, there have been recurring discussions and political initiatives at the local and county level (led by the Buzău County Council) to establish a new civil airport for the city. The most frequently discussed and viable proposal involves developing a civil passenger terminal at the existing military Boboc Air Base, effectively converting it into a dual-use (civil-military) airport. These plans aim to boost regional economic development, business travel, and tourism. As of the early 2020s, these remain long-term projects and have not progressed beyond the proposal and feasibility study stage, lacking concrete funding and a definitive timeline for construction.
