Standard and fixed-fare taxis are available 24/7 at designated stands outside each terminal's arrival hall. This is the most expensive option, with fares to central Tokyo typically costing ¥25,000-¥30,000. Fixed-fare services offer a set price to specific zones in Tokyo, providing cost certainty.
Major rental car companies including Toyota Rent a Car, Nippon Rent-A-Car, Nissan Rent a Car, and Times Car Rental have counters in the arrival halls of all terminals. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for many nationalities, along with your home country's driver's license. Pre-booking is highly recommended.
Narita offers excellent public transit.
Trains: The Narita Express (N'EX) provides direct, comfortable service to major stations like Tokyo, Shinjuku, and Shibuya (~60 mins). The Keisei Skyliner is the fastest route to Ueno and Nippori stations (~40 mins). Cheaper, slower options include the Keisei Access Express and Keisei Main Line.
Buses: Airport Limousine buses offer a wide network to major hotels and transport hubs, ideal for those with heavy luggage. Low-cost express buses (e.g., TYO-NRT) provide a budget-friendly direct connection to Tokyo Station and Ginza for around ¥1,300.
This is where I arrived to start my three years in Japan in September 1996. The airport had only the originak runway (the one in the lower partof the photo) then. the second, parallel runway had been slated to be built for nearly 20 years but delayed by farmers in the area who din't want to sell their land. At times the protests against airport expansion reached the point of people flying tethered balloons in the path of landing aircraft ... Japan is an "interesting" country to do large construction projects.
In addition to taking many flights in and out of Narita I had the opportunity to work "inside" Narita a number of times. My organization had a contracted "greeting" facility for US forces entering Japan in Terminal 1 which we had to move several times die to construction and it was a learning experience to see what goes on behind the normally closed doors to make an airport of this size actually operate.
