The facility was never a public airport and did not have a formal closure date. It was a military airstrip that likely ceased regular fixed-wing operations after 1952, when the Portuguese Army's aviation service (Serviço de Aviação do Exército) was disbanded and its assets were integrated into the newly independent Portuguese Air Force. The airstrip subsequently fell into disuse, while the military base itself remained active.
Military restructuring and mission change. The primary reason for the cessation of fixed-wing operations was the transfer of all army aviation assets and responsibilities to the Portuguese Air Force in the 1950s. The airstrip, which was ancillary to the base's main function as an artillery regiment, was no longer required for the types of aircraft the Army operated.
The site is an active and important military installation, home to the Portuguese Army's 5th Artillery Regiment. While the grass/dirt airstrip for fixed-wing aircraft is no longer maintained or used, the base is fully operational. A modern, marked helipad exists on the base and is actively used for military helicopter operations, supporting transport, training, and liaison needs.
The site is the location of the Portuguese Army's 'Regimento de Artilharia N.º 5' (RA5), a significant artillery unit and school. The airstrip's historical importance is purely military. When active for fixed-wing aircraft (primarily in the first half of the 20th century), it would have been used for light observation and reconnaissance aircraft for artillery spotting, liaison flights between military units, and pilot/observer training. It was never a commercial or civilian airport. The ICAO code PT-0139 is an unofficial identifier, likely originating from flight simulator scenery databases, and is not an official designation from the International Civil Aviation Organization.
There are zero plans or prospects for this facility to reopen as a public or private airport. It is located within a secure, active military base. Any future aviation use would be exclusively for the Portuguese Armed Forces. While the Portuguese Army is re-establishing a light aviation unit (Unidade de Aviação Ligeira do Exército), its focus is on helicopters, and there are no known plans to base fixed-wing aircraft at this location or to reactivate the old airstrip.
It was improved recently for an ultra light aircraft fly-in event but military authorisation is required to use it.
