Aeródromo Municipal de Ponte de Sor Airport serves Ponte de Sor, PT.
Aeródromo Municipal de Ponte de Sor (LPSO) is a public municipal aerodrome located approximately 5 km southeast of Ponte de Sor in the Alentejo region of Portugal.
Type of Facility and Operations: The aerodrome serves as a key facility for general aviation, flight training, and aeronautical events. It features a single asphalt runway (03/21) measuring 1,800 m by 30 m and operates from sunrise to sunset. It accommodates both visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR) under visual meteorological conditions, supported by an Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS). LPSO is certified by Portugal's National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) as a Class II aerodrome with Code 3C and Category 2 rescue and firefighting services. The facility includes multiple aprons, taxiways, hangars, and supports ultralight operations, glider flying (with prior permission), and civil protection aircraft, including aerial firefighting operations. It is also home to the Sevenair Academy, one of the largest commercial aviation schools in Europe. There is no scheduled commercial service.
Notable Features or History: Established in 1919 as a military landing field by the Portuguese Army, the aerodrome was inaugurated in the summer of that year. Its development reflects a century of aeronautical heritage, evolving from its military origins to a civilian facility under municipal management. Its central location, unobstructed airspace, and proximity to the Montargil reservoir have positioned it as a hub for tourism, education, and industry. Since 2017, it has hosted the annual Portugal Air Summit, the largest aeronautical event in the Iberian Peninsula. In 2022, an Airbus A320 airliner landed at the airport for the first time during this event. That same year, maintenance organization Aeromec inaugurated a new 8000 m² hangar capable of holding three A320-class aircraft simultaneously, with operations commencing in 2024. Plans were announced in 2023 for a new manufacturing plant at the aerodrome to produce Portugal's first indigenous airplane, the LUS 222 light regional aircraft. Recent investments include a helmet production factory by LD Helmet (opened July 2025) and an upcoming aircraft assembly line, with series production expected by 2028.
Current Status: Aeródromo Municipal de Ponte de Sor is currently an active public municipal aerodrome serving general aviation and flight training. It continues to host the Portugal Air Summit and is a site of ongoing development in the aerospace industry, including pilot training and manufacturing initiatives.
