Approximately between 2013 and 2016. The airstrip was listed as active in Portuguese VFR (Visual Flight Rules) manuals as late as 2012, but satellite imagery from the mid-2010s shows a clear state of disuse and overgrowth. The closure was not a singular event but a gradual abandonment, leading to its removal from official aviation publications.
Economic reasons and abandonment. As a small, private airstrip likely serving ultralight or agricultural aviation, its operation was dependent on the private owner's financial and operational interest. There is no public record of a specific incident, accident, or regulatory action forcing the closure. The most probable cause is that it became economically non-viable to maintain or was no longer needed by its owner, a common fate for small, private airfields.
The site is abandoned and defunct. Current satellite imagery clearly shows the former runway's outline, but it is heavily overgrown with grass and shrubs, making it completely unusable for any aircraft. The land appears to have reverted to its natural state, blending in with the surrounding agricultural fields and scrubland. There are no remaining aviation facilities like hangars or fuel storage on site.
The airfield held local significance as a private facility for general and recreational aviation. It was officially designated as a 'Pista ULM' (Ultralight Airstrip). When active, it featured a single unpaved runway, approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet) long, with a dirt or grass surface. Its primary function was to support ultralight recreational flying. Given its location in the heart of the Alentejo agricultural region, it is also possible it was used for agricultural aviation (crop dusting) to service the large local farms, known as 'herdades'. It was not a commercial airport and had no scheduled flights or significant infrastructure.
There are no known or published plans to reopen the Pista da Lagoa da Carrasqueira. The airstrip has been de-listed from official charts and databases maintained by Portuguese aviation authorities (NAV Portugal and ANAC). Significant investment would be required to clear the land, resurface the runway, and re-certify it for aviation use. Given its private nature and the lack of any apparent commercial or strategic need, the prospect of it reopening is extremely low.
Private agricultural airstrip of a nearby "monte". Using Google Earth's historical imagery function we can see the runway already existed by 2006, but it was extensively improved in 2010.
