The exact date is not officially documented, as it was a private, uncertified airfield. However, based on aviation community reports and historical satellite imagery, the airfield ceased operations and was permanently closed sometime in the late 2000s or early 2010s.
The airfield was a private venture. The closure was not due to a specific accident, military conversion, or urban development. Like many small, private airfields, the closure was likely due to a combination of factors including the high cost of maintenance, liability concerns, lack of use, or a change in the owner's priorities. As an uncertified strip (Pista ULM), it operated with fewer regulations, but its viability was entirely dependent on the private owner's ability and willingness to maintain it.
The site is abandoned and the airfield is defunct. Satellite imagery confirms the runway is still visible but is in a complete state of disrepair. It is heavily overgrown with grass and shrubs, making it unusable for any type of aircraft. The surrounding land remains agricultural, and the former airstrip is slowly reverting to farmland. There are no buildings or activities on the former runway.
Pista de Campo Maior, also known as Pista da Herdade dos Adães, was a small, private airstrip serving the general aviation community in the Alto Alentejo region. Its primary function was to support recreational flying for ultralight (ULM) aircraft. The airfield consisted of a single unpaved runway (oriented roughly 02/20) and very basic facilities. Its significance was entirely local, providing a convenient base for a small number of private pilots. It did not handle any commercial, cargo, or scheduled passenger operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Pista de Campo Maior. Given its extended period of closure, the significant cost required to clear, resurface, and potentially certify the runway to modern standards, and the existence of other operational airfields in the broader region, a reopening is considered extremely unlikely. The site will likely remain abandoned or be fully reclaimed for agricultural use.
Closed since 2000. How can be in "acceptable condition" in 2018? At least chech more recent photos !!!
Private agricultural airstrip of the "Monte da Contenda". Doubles as a country road, and looks to be in acceptable condition.
Private airstrip opened to the public used for recreational ULM flying, property of the nearby "Monte da Contenda". Closed sometime after 2010, according to sources due to its proximity to the Caia dam on its left, and has since been completely destroyed.
It can be seen clearly with the usage of Google Earth's 'historical imagery' function, if a period prior to 2010 is elected.
