Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2007-2008. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a clear runway in 2006, with construction of the solar plant beginning in 2007. By late 2008, the runway was completely removed and built over by the new facility.

Reason for Closure

Land redevelopment for a major renewable energy project. The site was selected for the construction of the Amareleja Photovoltaic Power Station (Central Solar Fotovoltaica da Amareleja). The strategic importance and economic scale of this solar energy project necessitated the acquisition and complete transformation of the land, leading to the permanent closure and dismantling of the airfield.

Current Status

The site of the former aerodrome is now an integral part of the Amareleja Photovoltaic Power Station. The exact coordinates of the runway are now covered by rows of photovoltaic solar panels. The facility, operated by the company Acciona, was one of the largest of its kind in the world upon its completion and is a key center for renewable energy generation in Portugal.

Historical Significance

The Aerodromo da Amareleja, also known as 'Pista da Herdade das Bernardas', was a small, private airfield with an unpaved (dirt/gravel) runway. Its ICAO designation (PT-0086) indicates it was primarily registered for ultralight (ULM) aircraft and general aviation. Its operations were characteristic of private airstrips in the Alentejo region, likely serving the agricultural needs of the large estate ('Herdade') it was on, such as crop spraying, as well as providing a base for local recreational and private flying. It had no scheduled commercial services and its significance was purely local.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the aerodrome. The land has been permanently and irrevocably repurposed for industrial-scale energy production. The massive infrastructure of the operational solar power plant makes any future aviation use at this specific location impossible.

Former public aerodrome certified for ultra-lights. Closed and destroyed in 2007 to give way for the construction of the Amareleja Solar farm; one of the biggest in the world.
If you use the 'historic imagery' function in Google Earth and visit a period before 2007 you'll clearly see the 3 grass/dirt runways, as well as the small hangar that used to be a part of this airfield.
