Approximately between 2012 and 2015. Satellite imagery shows the runway was clear and maintained until around 2012, but by 2015 it had fallen into significant disrepair and was becoming overgrown. The closure appears to have been a gradual process of abandonment rather than a formal, dated event.
Abandonment due to economic factors or lack of use. As a small, private airstrip (known in Portugal as a 'Pista de ULM' or Ultralight Airfield), its operation was dependent on private funding and interest. There is no indication of a specific incident, accident, or government action (like military conversion) that forced its closure. It likely ceased to be financially viable or necessary for its owner(s).
The site is completely abandoned and derelict. The former runway is no longer visible from the ground and is heavily overgrown with dense scrub and vegetation, making it indistinguishable from the surrounding farmland. All associated infrastructure, if any existed beyond the runway itself, is gone. The land has reverted to a natural, unused state and is completely unsuitable for any aviation activity.
Pista do Torrão was a private general aviation airfield serving ultralight (ULM) and light aircraft. Its significance was purely local, acting as a base and recreational destination for private pilots in the Alentejo region. It featured a single unpaved (dirt/grass) runway, approximately 600-700 meters in length. Operations were limited to private, non-commercial flights. It never handled commercial passenger traffic or significant military operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Pista do Torrão. Given the complete degradation of the site, significant investment would be required to clear the land, reconstruct the runway, and build new facilities. As it was a small private field, any reopening would depend on a new private owner with the interest and capital to restore it, which is considered highly unlikely. The airfield is considered permanently closed.
Private agricultural airstrip near Torrão. In very bad condition.
