Circa mid-2000s. While an exact date is not publicly documented, aviation community discussions from 2008-2009 refer to the closure as having happened 'a few years ago'. This places the closure approximately between 2004 and 2007.
The primary reason for the closure was its hazardous proximity to the flight path of a major military installation. The aerodrome was located directly under the final approach path for Runway 01 of the nearby Montijo Air Base (Base Aérea Nº 6, ICAO: LPMT). The Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority (INAC, now ANAC) ordered its closure to deconflict air traffic and eliminate the significant safety risk posed by ultralight aircraft operating in the same airspace as military transport and patrol aircraft approaching to land at Montijo.
The site is abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery confirms the location contains a clearly visible but completely overgrown and unmaintained runway. The land appears to be unused or has reverted to fallow agricultural land. There are no signs of any aviation activity, and the former runway is not usable by aircraft. Any buildings associated with the aerodrome are in a state of disrepair or have been repurposed for non-aviation storage.
Alhos Vedros Aerodrome was never a major airport for commercial or military traffic. Its significance was local, serving as a private ultralight (ULM - Ultraleve) airfield for the general aviation community. It was a hub for recreational flying, ultralight flight training, and a base for private aircraft owners in the region south of the Tagus River. The aerodrome consisted of a single unpaved (dirt/grass) runway and minimal facilities, likely a small clubhouse and possibly some basic hangars.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the aerodrome. The original reason for its closure—conflict with traffic from Montijo Air Base—remains and has in fact intensified. The Portuguese government has plans to convert Montijo Air Base into a secondary civilian airport to support Lisbon, which would drastically increase air traffic in the area. The reopening of a small airfield in this specific location is therefore considered impossible from a safety and regulatory standpoint.
Old airfield located in Alhos Vedros, near Moita and Barreiro. Couldn't find any definitive information regarding this airfield, though it appears to have been closed quite some time ago.
