Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 2013 and 2015. The airfield was noted as closed by pilots and in aviation forums around 2015, and it was subsequently removed from official aeronautical publications. Satellite imagery from this period confirms the cessation of aviation activity and the beginning of land redevelopment.

Reason for Closure

Economic and land development. The airfield was on private land, which was sold for the construction of a residential housing development. The closure was a direct result of the change in land use from recreational aviation to real estate, a common fate for small, privately-owned airfields located in areas with increasing property values.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. The land where the runway and hangar once stood is now a modern residential neighborhood. Numerous single-family homes have been built across the entire area. The memory of its past use is preserved in the name of the main street running through the new development, which is named 'Rua do Aeródromo'.

Historical Significance

The Aeródromo da Lourinhã, also known locally as 'Pista da Moita dos Ferreiros', was a small, private airfield dedicated to general aviation, with a strong focus on ultralight (ULM) aircraft. It featured a single unpaved (grass/dirt) runway, approximately 450 meters long, and minimal facilities, including a small hangar. Its significance was purely recreational, serving as a base for local pilots and aviation enthusiasts in Portugal's Oeste (West) region. It supported private flying and potentially some ultralight flight training, but it never handled commercial, scheduled, or military operations.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. The original site is permanently occupied by the housing development, making any reopening impossible. There are no known public or private plans to establish a new replacement airfield in the Lourinhã municipality.
