Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The exact closure date is not officially documented. However, the airfield likely fell into disuse during the late 1990s or early 2000s. It was rendered completely obsolete and superfluous with the opening of the new Islamabad International Airport (OPIS) in May 2018, which is located in the same administrative region.

Reason for Closure

The primary reasons for its closure were obsolescence and redundancy. The airfield was a very basic facility with a single runway and no significant infrastructure like a terminal, hangars, or modern navigation aids. Its purpose was superseded by the development of more advanced military airbases and ultimately the construction of the massive, state-of-the-art Islamabad International Airport just 25-30 km away, which can accommodate all types of aviation needs for the region.

Current Status

The site is currently abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery clearly shows the remnant of a single paved runway, which is severely decayed, cracked, and being reclaimed by vegetation. The runway is unusable for any form of aviation. There are no buildings on the site, and the surrounding area consists of agricultural fields. The land is not being used for any other purpose at present.

Historical Significance

Feteh Jang Airfield was never a public or commercial airport. It is widely believed to have been constructed as a satellite airfield or emergency landing strip for the Pakistan Armed Forces, likely the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) or Army Aviation Corps. Its location in the Potohar Plateau made it a strategic auxiliary field for nearby major bases like PAF Base Minhas (Kamra). Operations would have been limited to military training, light transport aircraft, helicopter operations, and potentially serving as a dispersal strip during times of conflict. It was a functional but minimalistic military asset from a previous era.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Feteh Jang Airfield. Given its state of extreme disrepair and its close proximity to the modern Islamabad International Airport, there is no economic or strategic justification for its rehabilitation. Any future for the site would likely involve its complete removal for agricultural, industrial, or real estate development rather than a return to aviation.
