Not applicable in a commercial sense. The airstrip was never a public or commercial airport. Its use as an active, high-tempo military airstrip significantly decreased after the main phase of large-scale military operations in the adjacent South Waziristan agency concluded, roughly between 2010 and 2014. It has since been maintained in a standby capacity.
The facility is a military airstrip, not a commercial airport, so it was not 'closed' due to economic reasons or an accident. The reduction in its operational frequency is directly linked to the evolving security situation and the changing strategic needs of the Pakistan Armed Forces. With the conclusion of major counter-insurgency campaigns in the region, the requirement for a constantly active forward airbase diminished.
The site is currently an active military installation under the control of the Pakistan Army, located within the Tank Cantonment area. The paved runway, approximately 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) in length, is kept in a well-maintained, usable condition. While it does not handle any scheduled or civilian traffic, it remains a functional, strategic military asset. It is used for occasional military transport flights, helicopter operations, and serves as a standby emergency landing strip for the armed forces.
Tank Airport, more accurately known as Tank Airstrip, has significant military and strategic importance. Its origins likely trace back to the British Raj, where it served as a frontier airstrip for controlling the volatile tribal territories.
In the modern era, it was operated primarily by the Pakistan Army and the Frontier Corps (FC). Its importance peaked during the War on Terror (from the early 2000s onwards) when it served as a crucial forward operating and logistics hub. It was instrumental in supporting military operations (such as Operation Rah-e-Nijat in 2009) in South Waziristan, which borders the Tank district. Operations included:
- Transport of troops and supplies.
- Medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) for injured soldiers.
- A staging point for helicopter and light transport aircraft (such as C-130s) missions.
It was a vital link in the military's supply chain to one of the most intense conflict zones in the country.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Tank Airport as a public or commercial facility. Its purpose is, and is expected to remain, exclusively military. The region's civilian air travel needs are adequately met by the Dera Ismail Khan Airport (IATA: DSK, ICAO: OPDI), located approximately 60 kilometers to the south. Given the strategic military nature of the Tank airstrip and the proximity of an existing commercial airport, there is no economic or logistical justification for its conversion to civilian use.
