Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The exact date of closure is not officially documented. However, the airport is believed to have ceased operations and fallen into disuse in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons. The airport was a private airstrip primarily built, owned, and operated by the Lianga Bay Logging Company (LBLC). The closure is directly linked to the significant decline and eventual cessation of the company's large-scale logging operations in the region. As the logging industry waned due to resource depletion and changes in government policy, the need for a private corporate airfield vanished, leading to its abandonment.

Current Status

The site is no longer recognizable as a functional airport. An analysis of satellite imagery shows that the former runway area is severely degraded and has been completely encroached upon by the local community. Residential houses, roads, and vegetation now cover the length of the old airstrip. It has been fully assimilated into the landscape of Barangay Diatagon and is used for housing and local access.

Historical Significance

Diatagon Airport was a private, unpaved airfield that served as a crucial logistical asset for the Lianga Bay Logging Company during the peak of the timber industry in Surigao del Sur from the 1950s to the 1980s. It was not a commercial airport for public use. Its operations were dedicated to general aviation, primarily handling light aircraft used to transport company executives, engineers, critical spare parts, and supplies to and from the remote logging concession. The airstrip was a symbol of the economic power of the timber industry in Mindanao at the time.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Diatagon Airport. Reopening is considered infeasible due to the extensive and permanent residential encroachment on the former airport grounds. Any such project would require the massive and costly relocation of an entire community. The air transportation needs of Lianga and the surrounding municipalities are currently served by the commercial airport in Tandag City (RPMT/TDG), located approximately 50 kilometers to the north.
