Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport ceased major operations gradually, likely between the 1970s and 1980s. A specific, documented date of final closure is not available, but its decline and eventual closure directly correspond with the development and expansion of the nearby Butuan-Bancasi Airport (BXU).

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was economic redundancy and obsolescence. The nearby Butuan-Bancasi Airport, located only about 15-20 kilometers away, was developed into the primary commercial airport for the entire Caraga Region. As Bancasi was upgraded to accommodate larger and faster aircraft (such as the BAC 1-11 and later modern jets), air traffic and investment were consolidated there, rendering the smaller, less-equipped Buenavista Airfield economically unviable for commercial services.

Current Status

The site is completely defunct as an airfield. Satellite imagery clearly shows the faint outline of the former runway, but the land has been repurposed. The northern end of the former runway has been encroached upon by urban development, including residential homes, a local road, and the Buenavista Special Education Integrated School. The remaining length of the runway is largely overgrown with grass and vegetation, with some sections appearing to be used for small-scale agriculture or as open community space. The site is not maintained for aviation and is unusable by aircraft.

Historical Significance

Buenavista Airfield served as a secondary or feeder airport for the municipality of Buenavista and the surrounding areas of Agusan del Norte. Its origins, like many provincial airstrips in the Philippines, may trace back to World War II as a military landing ground. In the post-war decades, it was a crucial link for the region's prominent logging and agricultural industries, facilitating the transport of personnel, mail, and cargo via small, propeller-driven aircraft. It connected the town to regional hubs at a time when land travel was less developed, playing a vital role in local commerce and administration before its functions were absorbed by the larger Butuan airport.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or credible prospects for reopening Buenavista Airfield. Reopening is considered logistically and economically infeasible due to its close proximity to the fully operational Butuan-Bancasi Airport, which serves the region's needs. Furthermore, the significant encroachment by permanent structures, including a school and residential housing, onto the former airfield property makes any potential reactivation prohibitively difficult and expensive.
