Taxis are not available directly at the airport terminal, which is on a separate islet (motu). You must first take the free Air Tahiti boat shuttle to the main dock in Vaitape. Taxis are available at the Vaitape dock to take you to destinations on the main island. Fares are typically fixed, so it's best to agree on the price before starting your trip.
Car rental agencies are not located at the airport itself. To rent a car, scooter, or buggy, you must take the airport boat shuttle to Vaitape on the main island where the rental offices are located. It is highly recommended to book your vehicle in advance, and some companies may arrange to meet you at the Vaitape dock.
The primary mode of transport from the airport is by boat. Air Tahiti provides a complimentary boat shuttle for its passengers to the main town of Vaitape. Many luxury resorts, located on their own private motus, operate their own private boat transfers directly from the airport terminal (often for a fee and must be pre-arranged). There is no public bus or train service directly connecting to the airport.
