Air Tahiti (ICAO: VTA) is a vital regional airline serving the islands of French Polynesia, connecting remote communities and supporting the region's tourism.
Air Tahiti's history is intertwined with the development of aviation in French Polynesia, beginning in July 1950 when Jean Arbelot and Marcel Lasserre founded an airline of the same name, initially operating seaplanes between Papeete, Raiatea, and Bora Bora. This early venture evolved through various iterations, including Régie Aérienne Interinsulaire (RAI) and Air Polynésie. The current Air Tahiti was established in 1987 when shares of Air Polynésie were sold to local investors, leading to a rebranding and a focus on modernizing its fleet with ATR aircraft.
The airline's main operational base and hub is Faa'a International Airport in Papeete, Tahiti. Air Tahiti operates a modern fleet primarily composed of ATR 72-600 and ATR 42-600 turboprop aircraft. As of July 2024, its fleet consists of 11 aircraft (nine ATR 72-600 and two ATR 42-600), with an additional four ATR 72-600s ordered for delivery between 2025 and 2028. Its subsidiary, Air Archipels, supplements operations with Twin Otter and Beechcraft King Air B200 aircraft.
Air Tahiti primarily serves a domestic and regional network, connecting 47 destinations within French Polynesia and one international destination to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. This extensive network spans the five archipelagos of French Polynesia, facilitating essential travel, administrative, school, and medical transport, and connecting over 90% of the territory's population. Air Tahiti is not a member of any major airline alliances like Star Alliance, SkyTeam, or Oneworld. From April 2025, Air Tahiti will introduce a new "PREMIUM" class cabin, featuring 8 seats located at the front of the aircraft. This new class offers enhanced services such as extra legroom, ergonomic seats, refined snacks, a refreshing towel and souvenir kit, priority services (check-in, boarding, baggage delivery), and a higher baggage allowance. The airline is also upgrading its entire fleet with the latest TiSeat 2 V Prime model seats to improve overall passenger comfort.
