Hikueru Airport (IATA: HHZ, ICAO: NTGH) is a small public airfield that serves as the primary air link for the atoll of Hikueru in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. Its role is crucial for the remote community, providing essential transport for residents, freight, and the handful of visitors who travel to the island. The airport is a lifeline, connecting Hikueru to the administrative and economic center of Papeete and supporting the local economy, which is historically centered on pearl farming.

Opened in 2010, the airport is a relatively modern addition to the atoll’s infrastructure. Prior to its construction, access to Hikueru was limited to infrequent and lengthy journeys by sea. The introduction of air travel significantly reduced the atoll's isolation, facilitating more reliable mail service, medical evacuations, and general mobility for its inhabitants. The airport is situated on the same main motu (islet) as the principal village, Tupapati. It is located at the northwestern tip of the landmass, approximately four kilometers from the village center. Access between the airport and the village is via a simple, unpaved coral road. Travelers typically arrange for a transfer with their local accommodation, as there are no formal taxi services, public transport, or rental car agencies available on the atoll.

Operations at Hikueru Airport are exclusively domestic. Air Tahiti is the sole airline providing scheduled passenger service, operating flights with its ATR aircraft. Routes typically connect Hikueru with Faa'a International Airport (PPT) in Tahiti, often with intermediate stops at other atolls in the Tuamotus, such as Hao or Makemo. Flights are infrequent, usually operating only a few times a week, and passenger volume is low, reflecting the atoll's small population.

Facilities at the airport are minimal, designed for functionality rather than comfort. The terminal consists of a very small, open-air shelter that serves as the check-in area and waiting room. There are no shops, restaurants, ATMs, or lounges. Basic restroom facilities may be available, but travelers should not expect comprehensive amenities. The runway is paved, and passengers walk across the tarmac between the aircraft and the terminal shelter.

For those traveling to Hikueru, it is essential to pre-arrange ground transportation with a pension or guesthouse prior to arrival. Flight schedules can be subject to change due to weather or operational factors, so confirming flight times is recommended. Given the lack of services at the terminal, visitors should bring their own water and snacks. It is also important to be aware of Air Tahiti's strict baggage allowance for inter-island flights.
