Rimatara Airport (IATA: RMT, ICAO: NTAM) serves as the sole aerial gateway to the remote island of Rimatara, the smallest inhabited island in French Polynesia’s Austral Archipelago. The airport is a critical piece of infrastructure, providing an essential link for residents to access services in Tahiti and facilitating a small but growing tourism sector focused on the island's unique culture and birdlife. Its role is fundamental to the island's economy and its connection to the rest of the world. Inaugurated in 2006, the airport marked a significant milestone for the community, drastically reducing travel time to and from Tahiti from a multi-day sea voyage to a flight of under two hours.

The airport is located on the northern side of the island, approximately two kilometers from the main village of Amaru. Due to the island's small size and limited infrastructure, there is no formal public transportation system, taxi rank, or ride-sharing service available at the terminal. Access for travelers is almost exclusively handled through pre-arranged transfers. Most local pensions and guesthouses provide complimentary or paid shuttle services for their guests, which should be coordinated at the time of booking. The short drive to any accommodation on the island offers an immediate introduction to Rimatara’s rural landscape.

Operations at Rimatara Airport are entirely domestic. The sole airline carrier is Air Tahiti, which provides scheduled flights connecting Rimatara with Faa'a International Airport (PPT) in Tahiti. Flights are not daily and typically operate only a few times per week, often as part of a route that includes the neighboring island of Rurutu. The airport handles a very low volume of passengers, reflecting the island’s small population and niche appeal.

The facilities at Rimatara Airport are basic and align with its small-scale operations. The infrastructure consists of a single, small, open-air terminal building that houses a check-in counter, a modest sheltered waiting area, and public restrooms. There are no restaurants, cafes, retail shops, or passenger lounges. Amenities are extremely limited, and travelers should not expect to find services like currency exchange, ATMs, or extensive food and beverage options. For departing passengers, it is advisable to arrive approximately 60 to 90 minutes before the scheduled flight. The check-in and security screening processes are simple and efficient. Given the reliance on pre-booked transport, ensuring your transfer is confirmed for both arrival and departure is the most important practical step for a smooth travel experience.
