Personal and economic reasons. The airfield was a private venture, and it closed permanently after its owner and operator retired. No successor was found to take over the operations.
The airfield is completely decommissioned. The site at the coordinates 51.39278, 3.53917 has been fully converted back to agricultural use. The former grass runway is no longer visible and has been integrated into the surrounding farmland. All associated structures, such as hangars and the clubhouse, have been removed.
Breskens Airfield, also known locally as 'Vliegveld 't Zand', was a private airfield primarily serving the ultralight (ULM/MLA) aviation community. Established in the early 1990s, it consisted of a single 650-meter grass runway (06/24). It was a popular recreational flying hub for enthusiasts in the Zeelandic Flanders region, providing a base for local pilots and attracting visitors from neighboring areas. It did not handle commercial or military traffic and its significance was purely within the general aviation sector.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. Given that the land has been reverted to agriculture for over a decade and the closure was due to the owner's retirement without a successor, a future revival of aviation activities at this site is considered extremely unlikely.
