Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airfield officially ceased operations in late 2011. A final 'fly-out' event, marking the definitive end of aviation activities, was held for pilots on the weekend of October 29-30, 2011.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for the closure was economic development and land rezoning. The municipality of Boxmeer designated the land for the expansion of the adjacent industrial park, 'Bedrijvenpark Sterckwijck'. The zoning plan was officially changed from 'airfield' to 'business park', forcing the airfield to close to make way for new industrial construction.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the 'Bedrijvenpark Sterckwijck' industrial estate. The runway, hangars, and all aviation-related infrastructure have been demolished. Large industrial facilities, including a major production and research plant for Danone Nutricia, now occupy the land where the airfield once stood.

Historical Significance

Boxmeer Airfield was a private airfield dedicated to general aviation, with a strong focus on ultralight aircraft (ULM/MLA). It featured a single grass runway (oriented 06/24) approximately 400 meters in length. The airfield was operated by the 'Stichting Vliegveld Boxmeer' (Boxmeer Airfield Foundation) and served as a vibrant hub for the recreational flying community in the region, attracting pilots from across the Netherlands and nearby Germany. While it did not handle commercial or military traffic, it was an important and well-regarded facility for ultralight flight training and leisure flying.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening Boxmeer Airfield. The land has been permanently repurposed and is fully occupied by large-scale industrial buildings and infrastructure. The complete and irreversible redevelopment of the site makes a return to aviation use impossible.
