Urban redevelopment and economic reasons. The land occupied by the airfield was designated for a major urban renewal project by the municipality of Vlissingen, as it was considered more valuable for commercial and residential development than for recreational aviation.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now unrecognizable as an airfield. The area has been transformed into a modern business and knowledge campus called 'Kenniswerf Vlissingen'. This campus houses educational institutions (such as the HZ University of Applied Sciences), technology companies, offices, and residential apartments. The adjacent area has also been developed into a marina and residential zone known as 'Dokkershaven'. There are no physical remnants of the runways or airport buildings.
The airfield, originally known as 'Vliegveld Vlissingen-Souburg', has a rich history. It was officially opened in 1937 and served as a regional airport before World War II, with KLM operating scheduled passenger services connecting Vlissingen to cities like Rotterdam and Haamstede. During WWII, it was seized and used by the German Luftwaffe, making it a target for Allied bombing raids. After the war, it was rebuilt and transitioned into a popular general aviation and recreational airfield. It became a hub for the 'Vliegclub Zeeland' (Zeeland Flying Club) and was actively used for private flying, gliding, and parachuting until its closure. The ICAO code NL-0056 reflects its later status as a small, non-commercial airfield.
None. The prospect of reopening the airport is zero. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for high-density urban development. The original infrastructure is gone, and the area is now an integral part of the city's economic and residential landscape, making any return to aviation use physically and economically impossible.
