Urban encroachment and redevelopment. The post-war expansion of The Hague required the land for housing (specifically the Waldeck neighborhood) and the creation of public recreational areas. The airport was no longer compatible with the growing city around it.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now integrated into the urban landscape of The Hague. The area is primarily used for recreation and housing. It contains the 'Landgoed Ockenburg' (Ockenburg Estate), a public park and nature reserve, various sports fields, a popular campsite (Camping Ockenburg), and residential neighborhoods. A prominent monument, the 'Ockenburg Monument', stands near the site to commemorate the Dutch soldiers who fought and died there during the battle in May 1940.
Ockenburg Airport, established in 1919, was primarily a civilian airfield used for sports aviation, most notably gliding. It was home to the 'Eerste Nederlandse Zweefvliegclub' (First Dutch Gliding Club). Its most significant historical moment occurred on May 10, 1940, during the German invasion of the Netherlands in World War II. The airfield was a primary target for German airborne troops (Fallschirmjäger) in the Battle for The Hague, an operation aimed at capturing the Dutch Royal Family and the government. Despite the surprise attack, Dutch forces mounted a fierce and successful counter-attack, recapturing the airfield from the Germans on the same day. This was a notable, albeit temporary, tactical victory and a significant morale boost for the Dutch military during the otherwise overwhelming invasion.
None. The area is now a densely populated residential and recreational zone. The original land has been fully repurposed and is an integral part of the city's infrastructure. There are no plans, and it is physically and politically impossible, to re-establish an airport at this location.
