Relocation and Modernization. The heliport was not closed in the traditional sense but was replaced by a new, more advanced facility. The ground-level heliport (NL-0045) was decommissioned upon the completion and commissioning of a new rooftop helipad on the main building of the Catharina Hospital. This move was made to significantly improve patient transfer times (reducing 'vein-to-vein' time), enhance safety by eliminating the need for an ambulance transfer from the landing site to the emergency room, and free up valuable ground space for hospital expansion.
The physical site of the former ground-level heliport has been redeveloped and integrated into the Catharina Hospital campus. The area has been repurposed for other hospital-related uses, such as access roads, parking, and landscaping. The active heliport for the hospital is now located on the roof of the main building, a short distance from the original site's coordinates.
The heliport designated as NL-0045 was the original ground-level Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) landing site for the Catharina Ziekenhuis (Catharina Hospital) in Eindhoven. As a major trauma center for the region, this heliport was a critical piece of infrastructure. Its primary and almost exclusive function was to handle the 'Lifeliner 3' trauma helicopter, operated by ANWB Medical Air Assistance. It played a vital role for decades in the rapid transport of critically injured patients from accident scenes to the hospital's specialized emergency care facilities, serving the provinces of North Brabant and Limburg.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the original ground-level heliport (NL-0045). Its function was permanently and officially transferred to the superior rooftop helipad, which is currently in full operation. Reverting to the old ground-level site would be a significant step backward in terms of medical efficiency and patient care.
