Approximately early 2009. The final legal decision by the Dutch Council of State (Raad van State) that sealed the airport's fate was made on December 22, 2008, allowing the zoning plan to be changed.
Economic and land development priorities. The airfield was closed to facilitate the expansion of the adjacent Trade Port Venlo, a major European logistics and industrial park. The regional government prioritized the development of large-scale distribution centers, which were deemed more economically valuable than the general aviation airfield.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the 'Trade Port Noord' logistics hub. The runway, taxiways, and hangars have been demolished and replaced by large-scale warehouses and distribution centers for major international companies. The area is now a key node in European road and rail freight transport, with no remaining trace of the airfield.
TrafficPort Venlo was a relatively modern general aviation airfield that opened in 1993. It was specifically developed to support the growing business and logistics region of Venlo by providing air connectivity. The airport featured a single asphalt runway (06/24) of approximately 900 meters and catered to business jets, private piston aircraft, flight training schools, and recreational flying. It is important to distinguish it from the historic and much larger World War II German military airbase, Fliegerhorst Venlo, which is located nearby but is a separate site.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for high-value industrial and logistics use. Re-establishing an airport at this location would be economically and logistically unfeasible due to the existing infrastructure and development.
