The heliport was closed as a permanent base of operations due to the strategic relocation of its primary user, the 'Lifeliner 2' trauma helicopter, to Rotterdam The Hague Airport (EHRD). The move was driven by several factors: 1) Stricter European (EASA) safety and infrastructure regulations for HEMS bases, which would have necessitated expensive upgrades to the rooftop facility. 2) Greater operational efficiency at a full-service airport, including faster refueling, readily available maintenance, and fewer restrictions for training flights. 3) The airport location provided more space to accommodate future, potentially larger, helicopter models.
The official heliport facility (ICAO: NL-0020) is permanently closed and is no longer a HEMS base. However, the physical infrastructure—the helipad on the hospital's roof—remains intact and operational. It is now used as a Hospital Landing Area (also known as a HAPI - Hospital Approach and Landing Area) for helicopters transporting patients to or from the Maasstad Hospital. It no longer has permanently stationed crew, fueling, or maintenance capabilities.
From its opening in mid-2011 until its closure as a base in 2018, the Rijnmond Medical Center South Heliport was a critical piece of emergency medical infrastructure for the southwestern Netherlands. It served as the exclusive home base for the 'Lifeliner 2' Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), operated by ANWB Medical Air Assistance. Its location atop the Maasstad Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center, facilitated the rapid deployment of the Mobile Medical Team (MMT) to accident scenes and the efficient transfer of critically ill or injured patients directly to the hospital's emergency department. The facility was officially registered with the ICAO identifier NL-0020.
There are no known plans or prospects to reopen the site as an official, permanently staffed heliport (NL-0020). The relocation of the Lifeliner 2 HEMS base to Rotterdam The Hague Airport is considered a permanent, long-term solution that better meets modern operational and regulatory requirements. Therefore, the prospect of reopening is virtually non-existent.
