Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2010-2011

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and urban development. The airfield was owned by the government of the state of Hidalgo. Citing that the facility was underutilized and that its land had become highly valuable due to urban growth, the state government sold the 14-hectare property to a commercial consortium. The goal was to promote economic development and job creation by building a shopping center on the site.

Current Status

The airport is permanently closed and has been completely demolished. The site was redeveloped into a commercial shopping plaza. As of today, the land is occupied by major retail stores, including a Bodega Aurrerá supermarket, a Coppel department store, and other businesses, along with associated parking lots and access roads. No trace of the runway or aviation facilities remains.

Historical Significance

The Aeródromo de Ixmiquilpan was a regional airfield that served the Mezquital Valley. It featured a single asphalt runway approximately 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) in length. Its primary operations included general aviation, serving private aircraft and air taxi services. It was also frequently used by state government aircraft for official transport, public security operations, and medical emergency flights. While not a major commercial hub, it provided vital air connectivity for a region not immediately served by a larger airport.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for high-value commercial use, making any potential reacquisition and reconstruction financially and logistically unfeasible. The closure is considered permanent.
