Approximately between 2018 and 2020. The airstrip's closure directly coincided with the construction and inauguration of its replacement, the Bavispe New Airport (MM15), which officially opened in November 2020.
The airport was closed due to replacement. The Mexican federal government constructed the Bavispe New Airport (ICAO: MM15), a modern facility with a paved runway and superior infrastructure, immediately adjacent to the old dirt strip. This new airport was built as part of a broader initiative to improve regional infrastructure, security, and economic development, rendering the old, private airstrip obsolete.
The site is permanently closed and abandoned. The original dirt runway is still clearly visible on satellite imagery, located just west of the new paved runway of MM15. However, it is unmaintained, overgrown with scrub and vegetation, and shows no signs of aviation activity. It exists now only as a scar on the landscape next to its modern successor.
The (Old) Rancho Oaxaca Airport was a private, unpaved airstrip primarily serving the needs of the local 'Rancho Oaxaca' and the remote Bavispe community. Its operations were limited to private general aviation, accommodating small propeller aircraft (e.g., Cessna, Piper) used for transporting ranch owners, personnel, guests, and light cargo. Its historical significance was providing essential air access to an isolated area of Sonora before the development of modern public infrastructure.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this airstrip. Its function has been entirely superseded by the new, government-funded Bavispe Airport (MM15), which is larger, safer, and better equipped. The old airstrip is considered permanently defunct.
