Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately mid-2020. The heliport ceased operations following a major leadership and legal crisis at its parent company, Cooperativa La Cruz Azul, which culminated in the ousting of its CEO in August 2020.

Reason for Closure

The closure was a direct result of a corporate corruption scandal. The heliport's primary user was the long-time CEO, Guillermo 'Billy' Álvarez. When he was removed from his position and warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of organized crime and money laundering, the new management took control of the corporate headquarters and ceased the heliport's operations. Its closure is tied to the change in corporate governance and the end of the previous administration's era of executive privilege.

Current Status

The site is the rooftop of the still-active Cruz Azul corporate office building. Satellite imagery confirms that the physical helipad markings ('H') and landing area remain on the roof. However, the facility is permanently closed, decommissioned, and is no longer used for any aviation operations.

Historical Significance

Helipuerto Cruz Azul was a private rooftop heliport located atop the corporate headquarters of the Cruz Azul cooperative. Its sole purpose was to provide executive helicopter transport for the company's top management. For decades, it allowed executives to bypass Mexico City's severe traffic, connecting them to airports, manufacturing plants, and other business destinations. While not of public historical significance, it was a prominent symbol of corporate power and the lavish logistics employed by the company's former leadership.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The current management of Cruz Azul has focused on restructuring and moving away from the practices of the previous administration. Reactivating a private executive heliport would be costly and symbolically inconsistent with their new direction. Therefore, the prospects for its reopening are considered virtually non-existent.
