Taxis are readily available 24/7 just outside the arrivals hall on Level 0. The official taxis are easily identifiable by their cream color with a yellow stripe. Fares are metered, and a journey to the center of Funchal typically takes about 20-30 minutes. A price list for key destinations is usually displayed at the taxi rank.
Numerous car rental companies operate directly from the airport, with desks located inside the arrivals hall. Options include major international brands like Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, and Avis, as well as local companies like Guerin and Madeira Rent. It is highly advisable to book your vehicle in advance, especially during peak tourist season. The car pickup and drop-off areas are located in a dedicated car park close to the terminal.
The main public transit option is the Aerobus, a dedicated shuttle service operated by the SAM bus company. It runs frequently between the airport and various key points in Funchal, including the main hotel district and the city center. Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver. Other local bus lines also stop at or near the airport, connecting to other towns on the island.
This is a nice small airport with an interesting final approach and landing due to limited runway length.
In 2016, it was announced that the airport would be renamed Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo in honour of Madeira native football player Cristiano Ronaldo.
