August 1945
The airfield was a military installation that ceased operations following the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. The subsequent demilitarization of Japan under Allied occupation made its military purpose obsolete.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped. It is now occupied by the global headquarters and the main manufacturing plant (Honsha Plant) of the Toyota Motor Corporation. After the war, the land was acquired by Toyota for its expansion, and the original runways and military buildings were demolished to make way for the vast industrial complex that stands there today.
Originally known as Koromo Army Airfield (ζζ―ιΈθ»ι£θ‘ε ΄), it was an important base for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force during WWII. Construction began around 1940 and was completed by 1944. Its primary functions were to serve as a training facility for army pilots and to provide air defense for the critical industrial region of Nagoya, which included major aircraft and munitions factories. The airfield was a target for American bombing raids during the later stages of the war.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land is of immense value in its current state as the central hub for one of the world's largest automotive manufacturers and is fully covered by industrial facilities, making any conversion back to an airfield impossible.
