The gliderfield was closed due to a government land redevelopment project. The site, located on the riverbed of the Anegawa River, was managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). As part of the 'Anegawa, Takatokigawa, and Yogogawa River Maintenance Plan,' the land was repurposed for flood control measures and converted into a public park, leading to the termination of the gliding club's permission to use the site.
The site of the former gliderfield has been completely transformed into a public park called Anegawa Ryokuchi (ε§ε·η·ε°), or Anegawa Green Park. The area now features walking paths, open green spaces, sports facilities, and areas for public recreation. All traces of the former runway and aviation facilities have been removed.
Torahime Gliderfield was a significant hub for recreational gliding in the Kansai region of Japan for several decades. It served as the primary base of operations for the Biwako Soaring Club (γ³γγγ½γ’γͺγ³γ°γ―γ©γ). The airfield featured an unpaved grass runway on the riverbed, typical for glider operations. It was used for training and recreational flights, utilizing both winch-launch and aero-tow methods to get gliders airborne. For many years, it was the center of the soaring community in Shiga Prefecture.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Torahime Gliderfield. The land has been permanently repurposed as a public park as part of a long-term government river management project. The former primary operator, the Biwako Soaring Club, has successfully relocated its operations to the Gifu-Sekigahara Gliderport (ε²ιι’γΆεζ»η©Ίε ΄), making a return to the Torahime site highly unlikely.
