Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2016. Historical satellite imagery shows the runway was clear in May 2015, but construction for a solar farm had begun by October 2016. The solar plant built on the site officially began operations in January 2017, confirming the permanent closure of the airfield by that time.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The site was sold and repurposed for the construction of a large-scale solar power plant, which was considered a more profitable use of the land. This is a common fate for smaller, privately-owned airfields in Japan.

Current Status

The site is now occupied by the 'ORIX Kaga Daishoji Mega-Solar Power Plant'. A large array of solar panels covers the southern two-thirds of the former runway and adjacent land. The northern tip of the former runway appears unused and overgrown. The site is no longer accessible or used for any aviation activities.

Historical Significance

Daishoji Gliderfield was a designated 'off-airport landing site' (場外離着陸場 - Jōgai Richakuriku-jō) located on riverbed land next to the Iburihashi River. Its primary function was to support recreational and training flights for gliders (sailplanes). It was a vital training ground for university aviation clubs, notably the Kanazawa University Aviation Club (金沢大学航空部), and other private gliding enthusiasts in the Hokuriku region. Operations typically involved winch-launching of gliders. The airfield had no scheduled commercial services and was purely for general aviation and sport flying.

Reopening Prospects

Effectively zero. The significant and permanent infrastructure of the mega-solar power plant on the property makes any return to aviation use infeasible. There are no known plans, discussions, or proposals to remove the solar farm and reopen the gliderfield.
