Military Decommissioning. The airfield was a military installation for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. It was abandoned and decommissioned following the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. It was never converted to a modern civilian airport.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped. It is now occupied by the 'Komono-cho Mega Solar Power Plant,' a large-scale solar energy farm, and industrial facilities operated by companies including JFE Engineering Corporation. The original runway and military structures are no longer present, though faint outlines of the runway were visible on satellite imagery before the solar farm's construction.
Takenaga Airfield, also known as Yokkaichi-Higashi or Komono Airfield, was a military airbase for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAS) during the final years of World War II (c. 1944-1945). Its primary role was as a training and dispersal field to protect aircraft from Allied attacks on major bases. It was strategically important for the air defense of the critical Nagoya-Yokkaichi industrial region, hosting fighter units like the 55th Sentai, which flew aircraft such as the Nakajima Ki-84 'Frank'. The airfield was attacked by Allied forces, including American P-51 Mustangs, before being abandoned at the war's end. The ICAO code 'JP-2111' is an unofficial designation, likely from a non-governmental database or flight simulator software, and does not represent a post-war certified status.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Takenaga Airfield. The land has been fully repurposed for industrial and renewable energy generation, making a return to aviation use virtually impossible.
