Economic reasons. The airfield's private operator, Hannya Aviation Co., Ltd. (般若航空株式会社), declared bankruptcy, which led to the cessation of all flight operations and the permanent closure of the facility.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped. In December 2014, the 'Takaoka Hannya Mega Solar Power Plant' began operations on the land. The large-scale solar farm now occupies the entire area of the former runway and its surroundings, with the layout of the solar panels still faintly tracing the outline of the old airfield.
Opened in 1962, Hannya Airfield was a private general aviation airfield (classified in Japan as a 場外離着陸場, or 'off-airport landing site'). It was a notable local aviation hub for the Toyama Prefecture. Its primary operations included:
- **Sightseeing Flights:** Offering scenic aerial tours over regional landmarks like the Tateyama Mountain Range and the Noto Peninsula.
- **Flight Training:** Providing instruction for aspiring pilots.
- **Agricultural Aviation:** Used for crop dusting and other aerial agricultural services.
The airfield featured a single unpaved (gravel) runway, which was initially 600 meters long and later extended to 800 meters. The fleet mainly consisted of light aircraft, such as the Cessna 172 and Piper PA-18 Super Cub.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Hannya Airfield. The land has been permanently repurposed for long-term energy generation, and the necessary aviation infrastructure has been removed. The region's aviation needs are served by the nearby Toyama Airport (TOY/RJNT).
