Approximately between 2008 and 2010. An exact official closure date is not publicly documented, but aviation activity at the site ceased during this period.
Economic and personal reasons. Soma Airfield was a privately owned and operated facility. Its closure stemmed primarily from the aging of the owner/operator and the increasing financial and logistical challenges of maintaining a private airfield for a small number of users. There was no single event like a major accident or military conversion that led to its closure; it was a gradual cessation of operations.
The site has been completely repurposed and no longer exists as an airfield. The land has been redeveloped into a large-scale solar power plant, known as the 'Notojima Mukōdamachi Solar Power Plant' (能登島向田町ソーラー発電所). Satellite imagery confirms that solar panels now cover the entire area of the former runway and surrounding grounds.
Soma Airfield, also known locally as Notojima Soma Airfield (能登島相馬飛行場), was a private, non-public airfield classified as a 'jōgai richakuriku-jō' (off-airfield landing site) in Japan. It featured a single unpaved grass/dirt runway. The airfield never served commercial, scheduled, or military traffic. Its sole purpose was to support the local general aviation and recreational flying community on the Noto Peninsula. It was a hub for private pilots, light aircraft, and ultralight enthusiasts, serving as a base for leisure flying and training in the region.
Zero. There are no plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening Soma Airfield. The complete conversion of the property into a major solar energy farm makes its return to aviation use physically and economically infeasible. The region's official aviation needs are met by the nearby Noto Satoyama Airport (IATA: NTQ, ICAO: RJNW).
