Approximately 2008-2009. Flight operations, primarily by the local glider club, ceased around this period, leading to the airfield's official closure and subsequent redevelopment.
Economic and operational reasons. The airfield was primarily used by the Fukui Glider Club, which faced difficulties in sustaining its operations. The land was subsequently sold or leased for redevelopment into a more economically viable project, a large-scale solar power plant.
The site has been completely repurposed and is now the location of the Echizen Atago Mega Solar Power Plant (越前市愛宕メガソーラー発電所). Construction began around 2013, and the plant became operational in October 2014. Satellite imagery clearly shows the entire area, including the former runway and taxiways, covered by solar panels, though the original airfield layout is still discernible.
Atago Airfield, also known locally as Fukui Glider Port (福井グライダー滑空場), was a small general aviation airfield. Its primary significance was as a regional center for recreational aviation in Fukui Prefecture. It served as the home base for the Fukui Glider Club and was used for glider takeoffs and landings, ultralight aircraft operations, and flight training. It did not handle commercial or military traffic and was purely a hub for sport aviation enthusiasts.
None. The land has been fully converted for long-term industrial use as a major solar energy generation facility. There are no known plans, discussions, or prospects for decommissioning the power plant to reopen the airfield.
