August 1945
The airfield was an Imperial Japanese Army Air Force base that ceased operations following Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. The site was subsequently demilitarized and redeveloped for industrial use.
The former airfield site has been completely redeveloped. The majority of the land is now occupied by the Aichi Steel Corporation's Chita Plant (愛知製鋼知多工場), a large industrial complex. The surrounding area is heavily urbanized and industrialized, and no visible remnants of the runway or original airfield structures remain.
Obu Airfield, known in Japanese as Rikugun Ōbu Hikōjō (陸軍大府飛行場), was a military airbase for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force during World War II. Constructed around 1943-1944, its primary role was as a training facility for pilots, including those for Special Attack (Kamikaze) units. It was home to educational flying regiments, such as the 112th, and operated various aircraft including trainers and fighters like the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien. The airfield was part of the air defense system for the vital Nagoya industrial area and was targeted by Allied bombing raids in 1945. The identifier 'JP-1909' is an unofficial code used in non-governmental aviation databases and is not a recognized ICAO code.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Obu Airfield. The site is occupied by a major, active industrial facility, and the extensive urban development in the surrounding area makes any future aviation use impossible.
