Omihachiman Ultralightport

Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The airfield was closed to facilitate the construction of a large-scale solar power plant. This conversion represents a more profitable and commercially viable use of the land, a common fate for small, privately-owned airfields in Japan.

The site is no longer recognizable as an airfield. The entire area of the former runway and hangars has been completely redeveloped and is now occupied by the Ebigawa Solar Power Plant (えびがわ太陽光発電所). The land is covered with rows of solar panels and related infrastructure.

Omihachiman Ultralightport was a private airfield, officially classified as a 'jōgai richakuriku-jō' (場外離着陸場), meaning an off-field landing and takeoff site not open to the public. Its operations were dedicated exclusively to ultralight and microlight aircraft. The airport served as a key recreational facility for the general aviation community in the Shiga Prefecture, providing a base for flight training, hobbyist flying, and scenic flights over the picturesque Lake Biwa area. Its significance was purely local, supporting a niche community of aviation enthusiasts.

Non-existent. The permanent and extensive nature of the solar farm installation on the property makes any prospect of reopening the ultralightport infeasible. The land has been irrevocably converted to a different industrial use.
