August 1945
Military Demobilization. The airfield ceased all operations following Japan's surrender at the end of World War II and the subsequent dissolution of the Imperial Japanese Army.
The former airfield site has been completely redeveloped and shows no visible traces of its original runways or military infrastructure. The land is now primarily occupied by the Yokaichi Electronics Industrial Park (八日市電子工業団地), a large industrial zone housing factories for major companies such as Kyocera, Murata Manufacturing, and TOPY Industries. Other parts of the former base have been converted into residential housing, schools, and public facilities. A stone monument (八日市飛行場跡の碑) stands in the area to commemorate the site's history.
Yokaichi Airfield, known in Japanese as 八日市飛行場 (Yōkaichi Hikōjō), was a major and historically significant base for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAS). Established in 1922, it was one of the earliest army airfields in Japan. It was home to the Army's 3rd Air Regiment and served as a primary center for pilot training, aircraft testing, and as an operational base for various fighter and reconnaissance units. Throughout the 1920s, 30s, and World War II, it played a crucial role in the development of Japanese military aviation. Due to its strategic importance, the airfield was a target for American bombing raids in the final months of the war in 1945.
None. The site has been fully and extensively redeveloped for industrial and urban use for several decades. There are no plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening the airfield as its original footprint is now occupied by critical economic and community infrastructure.
