Approximately between 2004 and 2006. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still intact in 2004, but by 2006, major construction of a boulevard was underway, cutting directly across the southern end of the runway, indicating the airport was permanently closed by this time.
Urban expansion and redundancy. The airport was situated in an area that became prime real estate for the growing city of Ghaem Shahr. Its closure was driven by the need for land for urban redevelopment. Furthermore, the proximity and superior capabilities of the larger Sari Dasht-e Naz International Airport (OINZ/SRY), located only about 30 km to the east, made this smaller airport obsolete for regional air traffic.
The airport no longer exists. The site has been completely redeveloped and absorbed into the urban landscape of Ghaem Shahr. The southern portion of the former airport grounds is now occupied by a large public park (Valieasr Park) and a major thoroughfare (Boulevard Vali Asr). The northern part of the old runway has been repurposed and is now the location of the Ghaemshahr International Fairground (نمایشگاه بین المللی قائمشهر), with the remaining paved surface used as local access roads and parking, surrounded by dense commercial and residential buildings.
Ghaem Shahr Airport was the original air facility serving the city and its immediate surroundings. With a single asphalt runway approximately 1,280 meters (4,200 feet) long, it handled general aviation and likely some regional passenger or cargo traffic using smaller turboprop aircraft. It played a role in connecting the industrial and agricultural region of Ghaem Shahr before air services were consolidated at the more modern and larger Sari Airport. It may have also been used for agricultural aviation (crop dusting), a common activity in the fertile Mazandaran province.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped with critical urban infrastructure, including a park, a major road, an exhibition center, and numerous buildings. Re-establishing an airport on this site is physically impossible. All air transport needs for the region are comprehensively served by Sari International Airport.
