The airport did not have a specific, abrupt closure date. It fell into disuse gradually after the 1979 Iranian Revolution and was effectively defunct by the 1980s as its primary functions ceased and a nearby alternative was developed.
The closure was primarily due to economic and logistical redundancy. After the 1979 revolution, its role in serving Pahlavi-era officials and dignitaries vanished. Concurrently, the larger and more capable Sari Dasht-e Naz Airport (IATA: SRY, ICAO: OINZ), located approximately 45 km to the west, was developed and expanded, becoming the primary air hub for the eastern Mazandaran province and rendering the small Behshahr airfield obsolete.
The airport is completely abandoned and derelict. The runway is still visible but is in a state of severe disrepair, cracked, and heavily overgrown with grass and vegetation, making it unusable for any aviation purposes. The surrounding land is largely unused, though there have been reports of parts of the site being used for other activities, such as a shooting range, and issues with illegal land use and construction.
Operational before 1979 during the Pahlavi era, Behshahr Airport was a small airfield with a single asphalt runway. Its main purpose was to facilitate travel for the Shah's family, government officials, and other dignitaries visiting the region's attractions, including the Safiabad Palace and the Miankaleh Peninsula, a popular royal retreat. It handled light aircraft and was not a commercial airport for the general public. It may have also supported limited general aviation or agricultural flights for the fertile region.
Prospects for reopening are very low. Over the years, local officials have occasionally raised the idea of renovating the airport to support the region's tourism industry. However, these discussions have never progressed to a funded, concrete plan. The high cost of rebuilding the runway and infrastructure, combined with the close proximity and full operational capacity of Sari Airport, makes the project economically unfeasible. There are no active plans for its revival.
